Typically, children and teens go through difficulties as they grow up, some having to deal with additional pain, such as abuse, a death in the family, divorce, and split marriages/families. Therefore, many kids and teens end up struggling with behavioral issues like: moodiness, grief, shyness or social awkwardness, and general difficulties expressing themselves in healthy ways. Teens may end up expressing themselves through addictive, destructive behaviors and detaching from their surroundings by using drugs, video games, internet, or acting out violently, leading to generalized patterns of isolation and avoidance.
I am passionate about working with children and teenagers. Most of the work I do with children allows them to express themselves through play therapy; using art, sand tray, and different expressive games. With teens I work a bit differently, offering them a lot of space to reflect, figure themselves out and also learn how to stay true to their experience with me as I show up authentically and offer whatever I can to help as a guide that is familiar with the terrain.
I have been working with youngsters for many years as they embark on the arduous journey of figuring themselves out. My experience with youth has included working as a wilderness field guide at an outdoor therapy program in the mountains of Utah, working with families and teens in the Bay area with Vive, and Coyote Coast, and I currently do therapeutic mentoring with teens in my private practice in San Francisco.
Working with children and teenagers can open up an exploration into what is happening within the family and provides the opportunity to look more deeply at the family system through family therapy. Holding a more holistic approach, I see the family as an integral functioning entity that impacts everyone in it, both at a conscious and unconscious level. When families take time to look more deeply into the family patterns that are often inherited, they are able to manifest deeper connections, understanding, and support for one another. Often times, one family member can be expressing something deeper for the whole family to take a look at and understand together.
